Turning 2Playgroup

Uses single words, then two-word phrases, to ask for what they want
May ask for the same favourite story or song again (and again, and again)
Points, gestures and babbles to share whatever has caught their eye

Turning 3Pre-Nursery (N1)

Starts speaking in short sentences, and loves catchy rhymes
Names familiar objects, people and places with growing confidence
May begin to spot familiar letters, like the first letter of their name

Turning 4Nursery (N2)

Chats in full sentences and asks endless questions
Recognises some letters and starts connecting them to sounds
Retells favourite stories and answers “what comes next?”

Turning 5Kindergarten 1 (K1)

Blends letter sounds into first read words and simple sentences
Writes recognisable letters, including their own name
Speaks up at show-and-tell with growing confidence

Turning 6Kindergarten 2 (K2)

Reads simple books independently and writes short sentences
Presents ideas confidently to the whole class
Converses comfortably in English and their mother tongue

Turning 2Playgroup

Loves peek-a-boo, and looks for a toy hidden under a cloth
Presses, shakes and drops things to see what happens: cause and effect in action
Starts to anticipate familiar routines, like a nap after lunch

Turning 3Pre-Nursery (N1)

Sorts and matches by colour, shape or size
Enjoys pretend play: feeding teddy, driving a cardboard bus
Starts conversations and expects real answers to real questions

Turning 4Nursery (N2)

Counts small sets of things: one, two, three, touching each one
Notices patterns, similarities and differences everywhere
Tests ideas out loud: “what happens if…?”

Counts, compares and works with numbers in hands-on ways
Plans and tests ideas in simple experiments
Sequences a robot's steps: early computational thinking

Walks steadily, and may start to run
Feeds themselves with a spoon and drinks from a cup, spills and all
Scribbles with a chunky crayon and stacks a few blocks

Turning 3Pre-Nursery (N1)

Runs, climbs and kicks a ball with growing confidence
Manages simple self-care: washing hands, pulling on shoes, tidying up
Practises staying dry, as toilet learning begins in earnest

Turning 4Nursery (N2)

May balance on one foot, pedal a tricycle or use child-safe scissors
Handles buttons, zips and puzzle pieces with nimbler fingers
Climbs, jumps and lands (mostly) on two feet

Turning 5Kindergarten 1 (K1)

Pedals, balances and masters bigger playground challenges
Draws, cuts and writes with growing control
Picks up healthy habits and safety smarts for daily life

Turning 6Kindergarten 2 (K2)

Writes comfortably for longer stretches, pencil grip sorted
Moves with coordination and control across sports and games
Manages self-care fully: dressing, packing, staying organised

Keeps a trusted adult in sight while venturing off to explore
Plays happily alongside other children: playing beside comes before playing with
Feels big feelings, and settles when comforted by a familiar teacher

Turning 3Pre-Nursery (N1)

Begins to name feelings like happy, sad and angry with a teacher's help
Takes turns for short stretches, with gentle reminders
Shows concern when a friend cries: a pat, a hug, a fetched teacher

Turning 4Nursery (N2)

Starts playing with friends, not just beside them
Follows classroom rules with growing independence
Understands how their actions make others feel, and can make amends

Turning 5Kindergarten 1 (K1)

Works in a team, shares fairly and takes turns without prompting
Talks through small conflicts with words
Shows care for friends and starts making responsible choices

Knows right from wrong, and chooses right even when it's hard

Sways, bounces and claps along to music
Explores paint, dough and textures with whole hands (and sometimes toes)
Copies simple actions in songs and finger plays

Turning 3Pre-Nursery (N1)

Sings along to favourite songs, actions included
Squeezes, rolls and shapes playdough with real purpose
Gives voices to toys during pretend play

Turning 4Nursery (N2)

Draws people and things you can (almost always) recognise
Builds elaborate pretend worlds with friends
Joins music and movement with gusto, and strong opinions about songs

Turning 5Kindergarten 1 (K1)

Sings, dances and role-plays, sometimes for a real audience
Creates art with intention: “this is our block, that's my grandmother”
Experiments with instruments, rhythm and melody

Performs with polish: concerts, presentations, drama
